About Monemvasia

Monemvasia lies at the foot of a rock which rises up to 194 meters from the sea and is 1.6 km long. On top of the rock was 583 AD. built a Byzantine citadel, which served to protect the surrounding villages. But soon on the southeast side at the foot of the steep slope, a small town called Monemvasia was built. Monemvasia quickly became an important base. It was not until 1249, after a three-year siege, that Monemvasia was forced out of the hands of the Franks; however, it was returned to the Byzantine Empire in 1263. After Constantinople 1453, Mystras 1460 and Trapezunt 1461 were conquered by the Ottomans, Monemvasia was the only remnant of the Roman Empire. Alone unable to survive, the city subordinated itself first to a Catalan pirate, then to the Pope and finally to the Venetians. In 1540, however, it was taken by the Turks. In 1821 it was finally conquered by the rebellious Greeks in the liberation war.
Since 1980, the lower city began to rebuild and Monemvasia turned into a popular tourist resort.
